Faculty Services Guide: Law Librarian Services

Law Librarian Services

1L Legal Research Course

Law library faculty members teach the first-year course Legal Research Tools and Strategies in the Fall Semester. The course covers case law, statutes, secondary sources, administration law, legislative history, legal research methods and practice-ready research.

Customized Course Guides

The library faculty will, upon request, prepare a customized research guide for your course in order to assist your students in maximizing the learning potential offered by your course. Because the guide is customized for your course and is prepared in cooperation with an information expert, the guide will be perfectly suited for your course and can be modified at any time to adapt to the changing needs of your course and students.

Customized Informal Liaison Program

Law faculty who need research assistance with projects are welcome to contact any of the law librarians. If a law librarian does not feel qualified in a particular area of law, they will refer the law faculty member to a librarian who is familiar with that area. The law library does not formally pair librarians with faculty members.

Guest Lectures

Law library faculty members are available to offer guest lectures on a variety of topics. Courses in which law librarians have given presentations include Introduction to United States Law, Legislation, Elements of Law, International Law, Comparative Law, and European Union Law Seminar.  Law librarians have also offered lectures on topic selection, The Bluebook, and researching international law to the law school’s moot court teams and law reviews. In addition, law librarians have offered presentations at programs offered by the Career Services Office and at continuing legal education seminars.

Reference Services

Each of the librarians of the H. Laddie Montague, Jr., Law Library has a unique legal background. While you should feel free to speak with any of the librarians about your issue, you may be referred to another librarian who may have more expertise in your particular field.

Research Assistant Liaison Program

This program pairs summer faculty research assistants with a law librarian who serves as a point of contact for research questions. Research assistants are also provided with an overview of library databases and print materials that are particularly relevant to the research topics. Research assistants are required to register for the program in advance; applications are sent out electronically during the Spring semester.

Strategic Legal Research

Strategic Legal Research is an upper-level three-credit course taught by the law librarians. The processes and techniques of research are explored from historic, conceptual, and practical perspectives. Among the material covered in the course are international and foreign research, legislative history, practice resources and administrative law.
